Wānanga — Learn more, get involved, and help us learn from the past to shape the future

Who —

Ngā Ringaringa Waewae (NRW) is a cooperative of individuals directed by Whanganui hapū under the umbrella of Progress Castlecliff Inc. Full detail of our structure can be found here.

What —

Delivering community and hapū aspirations in Te Kaihau o Kupe | Castlecliff in compliance with Tupua Te Kawa — full Kawa are set out in the legislation here.

Why —

Te Awa Tupua legislation came into force in 2017 and calls for all people of the Whanganui River catchment to collaborate for the well being of Te Awa Tupua. The legislation calls for a community and hapū lead approach. NRW serves as a prototype for operationalising this legislation and ancient indigenous wisdom today — working towards inter generational social, environmental, economic and spiritual abundance | mouri ora, mouri awa, mouri tangata.

How —

Through facilitating community wananga processes and collaborating with stake holders NRW continuously gauges hapū and community aspirations, while simultaneously co–designing, co–creating, and co–managing various projects aimed at delivering those aspirations. We see all mahi (work) as an opportunity to wānanga (learn) as a community and individually.

When —

The Tupua Te Kawa on which NRW’s kaupapa is based is ancient wisdom generously gifted by Whanganui Iwi. Progress Castlecliff Inc started in the 1990s, and has a long history of delivering community aspirations, from saving the Duncan Pavillion, building the skatepark, to the Castlecliff Rejuvenation Project, Castlecliff Library, Rangiora Street upgrades and The Citadel. Through the Te Puwaha project hapū and community began working closely together, both groups being part of the other and deeply committed to the future of Te Kaihau o Kupe | Castlecliff.

Where —

Te Kaihau o Kupe | Castlecliff as a prototype for community and hapū lead delivery anywhere in the Whanganui River catchment.
